Pothole Asphalt Repair/Patching

Asphalt naturally deteriorates over time, and this process can be accelerated by neglect, poor maintenance, and surprisingly, infrequent traffic. As asphalt ages, it begins to crack, creating pathways for water to seep into the substrate and sub-surface layers. When water freezes, it expands and erodes the material, causing the cracks to widen and deepen. If left untreated, this can lead to the formation of “alligator” cracks or, in severe cases, large sections of the asphalt breaking away, resulting in potholes.

Pothole Patching

Pothole patching is a cost-effective, straightforward solution for repairing areas where potholes have formed but the surrounding asphalt remains intact. In this process, a small section around the pothole is cut out, and fresh asphalt—known as a patch—is applied to fill the void. The patch is then compacted using a vibration roller or compactor, and the edges are sealed with hot crack filler to prevent future water infiltration. During colder months, a temporary “cold patch” may be used until weather conditions allow for more permanent repairs.

Asphalt Replacement

For larger areas of asphalt damage, Black Rock Pavement recommends full removal and replacement. In this process, the damaged asphalt is carefully removed and the surface is cleaned. A new layer of asphalt is then laid down, rolled smooth, and the edges are sealed with crack filler to protect against future water infiltration. Typically, once the lot is sealed again, the repair will blend seamlessly with the rest of the pavement, making the repair almost invisible.
